Frankenstein

After reading Frankenstein, a very well-written and interesting novel, there are still a number of questions I continue to ask myself about the book. These questions have to do with the character of Frankenstein and the actions of Victor throughout the book. There are many what-if situations throughout Frankenstein.

What if Victor cared for the creature after he created it?

What if Victor looked for the creature when it ran away?

What if Victor created a second creature?

The last question is one I find very interesting and perhaps one of the most interesting dilemmas throughout Frankenstein. Through class discussion and reading analysis online, it seems that many people hold different views about this aspect of the novel. Some people believe that Victor did the right thing in not creating a second creature. They believe that the two would have caused destruction together as the creature would have an accomplice.

I hold a very different view. I believe that Victor should have created the second creature. The original creature that Victor created longed for a sense of belonging. This is shown throughout the novel as he longs to be accepted by De Lacey and Victor. I believe that if Victor were to create the second creature the first creature would not have caused more destruction. He would have felt a sense of belonging and purpose in life. He would no longer feel outcast by society as he would have someone just like him. The only reason that he acts like a monster is because society labeled him as a monster. Prior to being outcast by society he did not do anything to harm others. He had hope that he would be accepted but when society failed him he began to act like a monster. Therefore, if Victor would have created the second creature, the creature would have had a sense of belonging and purpose. It would no longer matter what society thought of him. Although Victor is very intelligent he does nothing throughout the novel to try to fix the problem he created and I believe that creating the second creature would have been a solution.
